In memoriam Jirí Hofírek

On March 8, 2025, Jirí Hofírek passed away, leaving behind a lasting legacy as one of the most influential figures in Czech and European powerlifting.

Since 1973, he served as a coach and head of the Lovosice club, competing in the North Bohemian League, the oldest Czech competition.

He later became Chairman of the Technical Commission of the Czechoslovak Bodybuilding and Powerlifting Association and was instrumental in the division of powerlifting and bodybuilding in the country. From 1986 to 2006, he was a state coach.

As a referee, he achieved national status in 1980, became an International Category 2 referee in 1993, and earned Category 1 International referee status in 1998, becoming the first in Czech history. He officiated at 180 World and European Championships and two World Games.

1993-2006 he was best known for his roles as General Secretary of the Czech Powerlifting Association

2003-2018 served as EPF Championship Secretary

2018-2022 worked as Assistant EPF Championship Secretary

2003 honored with induction into the European Powerlifting Federation Hall of Fame.

With an impressive 52 years of service, he was a key figure in the development of powerlifting in Europe and a cornerstone of the sport for five decades.
