Press Release for European Open, Masters and Juniors Equipped Bench Press Championships, 16 – 19 October 2019, Tampere, Finland 2019

The European Powerlifting Federation and the Finnish Powerlifting Federation welcome you to Tampere for the European Equipped Bench Press Championships.

The organizer for the Championship Tampereen Voimanostajat is the largest powerlifting club in Finnish Powerlifting Federation with almost a hundred members and 54 licensed competing athletes in 2019. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the club and we are proud to organize our first major international championship for the EPF. 

Tampere is the third largest city in Finland and the largest inland center in the Nordic countries. Currently there are 235 239 inhabitants in Tampere (year 2018), and close to half a million inhabitants in Tampere Region, which comprises Tampere and its neighboring municipalities. Tampere is one of the three most rapidly developing regions in Finland. It is a center of leading-edge technology, research, education, culture, sports and business.

Tampere’s city centre is surrounded by lake and ridge scenery, sited on an isthmus between lakes Pyhäjärvi and Näsijärvi. The Tammerkoski rapids run through the city.Pyynikki, which was formed by the action of ice and sea more than 10,000 years ago, is the world’s highest gravel ridge. At its highest it rises 80 metres above Lake Pyhäjärvi and 160 metres above sea level. There are 200 lakes and ponds in Tampere, and a total of 450 in the entire region. 24 per cent of Tampere’s surface area is water and 76 per cent land. Over 19 per cent of the land has a town plan. There are numerous nature reserves in Tampere. Pyynikki and Viikinsaari near the city centre are the best known of them. Parks and green areas amount to 2,400 hectares, approximately 100 square metres per inhabitant. The city also has four allotment areas. The Hatanpää allotment, established in 1916, was among the first in Finland.

The most famous landmark of Tampere is the Näsinneula Tower which is 168m tall. It is situated in a amusement park Särkänniemi. There is a revolving restaurant at to top of Näsinneula. There are a lot museums in Tampere, among them a Lenin museum and a Moomin museum. 

We welcome 273 Athletes, 181 Male and 92 Female from 18 Nations to be crowned  European Equipped Bench Press Champion 2019.
