Historical view of the EPF Officials from 1977 to 2020

By Arnulf Wahlstrøm

EPF mile stones

Foundation

EPF was founded 14. May  1977 in Turku, Finland and the  first 10 years of its history, EPF’s responsibility  as organisation  mainly was to  direct the various European championships. IPF took care of the general “policy” of  the European powerlifting  as well as world wide. Most of this period  IPF and EPF had “common administration “ as  Vic Mercer from GB was president and Arnold Boström from  Sweden general  secretary in both federations.

Constitution and By-Laws

At the EPF Congress in 1987 an EPF Constitution and By-Laws prepared by  Vic Mercer, Heiner Köberich and John Moody was accepted  by the Congress delegates. This was a mile-stone in the history of EPF and from that year EPF had the power to structure European powerlifting to a strong and efficient sport under the umbrella of the IPF.

Vice  Presidents

Up to 1986 one EPF vice president from each member country was appointed at the yearly Congress. These vice presidents  had no “executive mandates” and were not appointed to take care of any practical duties for EPF. This changed in 1987 with the EPF Constitution. From 1988 only one EPF vice president was elected every 4 year being a member of the EPF Executive.

Two presidents died

Two of the past EPF presidents died under their presidency. Helge Stave from Norway acted as president only one and a half  year  before  he died in 1981 and Wouter v. d. Toorn  from the Netherlands was president for only 2 years when he died in 1989.

Soviet Union

A new dimension in European and World wide powerlifting was introduced when the former Soviet Union countries joined EPF and IPF starting from  about 1990. The process to opening up Eastern Europe started  in 1984 with Czecho-Slovakia and Poland. The Baltic Cup was promoted by EPF and organised from 1987  and  played an important part in recruiting new IPF and EPF member countries from Eastern Europe.
